A Snowshoe View
White Fir – Tahoe began on Mount Rose while standing in snowshoes. State Route 431 winds down the western slope above Lake Tahoe, but it lacks places for stopping to enjoy the view. So I strapped on my snowshoes, threw my painting gear into my backpack and trekked to this weathered pine, finding it to be a new way to tell my Tahoe story.
I sketched it out in oil paint on a small panel, around 12" tall, and shortly after returning to the studio the painting sold. When I got the itch to design it into a block print, I was without my first-hand reference. So I relied on a photo I took of the painting before it went away.
I love making Tahoe a subject matter, not because it's easy, but because it's hard. There are a handful of commonly photographed views of the lake, and anything new must be extracted with much effort. Years ago I recognized this and made it a primary objective to discover new ways to see the remarkable place.
